How to Use a Standard Hot Melt Glue Gun

In crafting, packaging, manufacturing and home improvement, there are many types of adhesives and tools that can be used for applying them. Sometimes you buy supplies that come with a sticky backside, or you use pastes, cold glue, tape or hot melt glue. This article will tell you how to use a standard hot melt glue gun for your project needs. Instructions 1. Gather all the supplies and materials needed for your project. Place them on a surface that is not too far from an electrical outlet. Take a look at your glue gun. Locate the safety (if there is one) and the metal rest (if there is one). 2. Locate the trigger. Usually this is just behind the barrel of the gun on the underneath side. It should be a solid piece of plastic that looks something like a pie slice. Above the trigger you will see the barrel loader. The glue sticks will go here. Inside this loader is a small, round piece of plastic. This is what will push the glue stick through the barrel. When you pull the trigger, you can watch the plastic squeeze to move with it. 3. Examine the electrical cord on the gun. Make sure there are no breaks in the outer lining and no frays at the base of the gun. Plug the gun into the nearby electrical outlet. Allow it approximately fifteen minutes to reach operating temperature. 4. After the gun has heated, insert a glue stick as far as it will go without forcing it too hard. Now, when you pull the trigger, a small drop of glue will come out of the tip of the gun. 5. Practice gluing on scrap materials before you glue your project materials. This will give you a feel for the trigger pressure and the speed the glue will come out of the gun. Release the trigger and quickly press the tip down onto the surface of your scrap material and pull it to the side. This will break the glue and stop it from stringing out when you pull away. Continue practicing this until you get the proper amount of glue you need for the object you will be using. 6. Start carefully applying glue to your project materials. When you are finished using the glue gun, pull the glue stick slightly back to keep more glue from being unnecessarily melted. Do not remove the glue stick, because it can be used for your next project as well. Always rest the glue gun above a paper towel or a paper plate for protection from unwanted dripping glue.
