As to where the sales training function should lay on a company organization chart this is an interesting issue, which begs the question about corporate attitudes to learning general. Businesses in this country have been criticized for not getting education seriously enough. Specifically, the buck stops at the top - the Sales and Marketing Director, if there is one, the Leader if there is not.?The government has become increasingly associated with promoting education and training at all levels. During the time of writing it is heavily promoting leadership training and you can find an amount of awards available to companies wanting to specifically improve their leadership - and sales leadership would be included by this. Ongoing education remains the responsibility of line management, but duty lies also with the individual. To encourage individual responsibility some companies have developed a system whereby the individual sets out their own training program. They are the so called Learning Companies. In some instances this has given management the reason to abdicate responsibility for training. This tendency must be reversed.??
