The standard old-timey alive text smilies are still very democratic amongst quite a few Gmail users, and are still the default option set. Now you can view them in the smiley popup window (accessible from the lower right corner of the chat window).

As an example, the graph below uses a vertical bar for the economic value and hyphens for the graph bar itself. Note, that since the hyphen takes more horizontal space than a vertical bar, we use a larger divisor seven, in this case to keep the graph at about the same scale.
