Honda's Unwanted Title: Most Stolen Car
Because the first Civic rolled off the assembly line in July 1972, Honda is a brand symbolic of safety, quality and endurance. Honda owners are faithful to the company -- whether or not they require a small economy car to save on gas, a larger wagon to transport the household on vacation or perhaps a reliable vehicle for any university student, Honda owners look to their favorite manufacturer for a vehicle they can trust. And in return, Honda constantly creates attractive vehicles that, even though they have changed in appearance with time, still keep your original simplicity and traditional Honda look.
But Honda owners aren't Honda's only fans. According to the 2010 National Insurance Crime Bureau's (NICB) top 10 list, the 1994 Honda Accord and the 1995 Honda Civic would be the #1 and #2 most stolen cars in the usa, respectively. Which isn't a new development -- the Civic and Accord make their email list for more than ten years, and also have spent nearly all that point in the top two spots.
Why Steal an Old Honda?
The Honda Civic is the quintessential well-made economy car. It's fuel-efficient and has proven extremely reliable, but typically has a discounted than other cars in its category. It is then well suited for a single person needing reliable transportation, or parents supplying their teen drivers with a safe car to move them to school and other destinations. However, the things that allow it to be well suited for drivers are the same things that attract car thieves too. Civic parts have been in high demand, in the factory Honda rims, towards the doors and bumpers, so a thief will seize the chance to part the Honda Civic owner from his vehicle.
The Honda Accord costs more than its Civic counterpart, but it's also a more stylized car. Produced to have an older car buying audience, still it retains the same efficiency and reliability of the Civic. Thieves prefer to possess the Civic, but due to the 1994 Accord's lack of anti-theft technology, it is simpler to steal, which puts it within the top location for thefts.
It is quite ironic that both the Accord and Civic -- produced keeping the vehicle safe, quality and longevity in your mind -- now find that those exact qualities place them at the top of their email list as the vehicles most stolen and divided for parts.
Although owners of the 1994 Honda Accord and 1995 Honda Civic still need to have a careful eye on their own cars, car thefts happen to be steadily decreasing over the last couple of years. The NCIB reports that car thefts have dropped 7.2 percent between 2009 and 2010. This decrease arrives partly to improvements in anti-theft technology. So, although the 1994 and 1995 Hondas did not come equipped with anti-theft systems, theft-deterrent systems could be installed now, and that should lower the general theft rate for cars, and for all of the cars on the top ten list.
