Actos

is a medication of the thiazolidinedione category that is fairly recent. It is used by itself or possibly in combination with other medicine including the hormone insulin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The medicine lowers blood sugar levels and boosts the body#&39;s level of sensitivity to insulin. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Actos in the late 90s.

Type-2 diabetes currently effects nearly 20 million people in the country. It is a condition that involves high blood sugar amounts due to the body#&39;s inability to effectively use insulin. However, if the condition is left untreated, it can lead to blindness, kidney problems, and cardiovascular disease, and bladder cancer.

Shortly after the approval of Actos, an additional thiazolidinedione called Rezulin, was removed from the shelves because varied studies surfaced about people that developed deadly liver disease soon after taking the medication.

Additional cases came forward after people took Actos or Avandia and developed congestive heart failure which pushed the ADA and the American Heart Association to release a warning for diabetics taking Actos because they were at an increased risk of developing heart disease and bladder cancer.

The FDA recently released a new notice according to its review of details from a continuous clinical trial which showed Actos elevated the risk of people developing bladder cancer following using the drug for more than a year. As a result, the FDA required the makers of Actos to release and now include a black box warning (greatest and strongest label change) about the serious dangers linked to use of the drug.

Presently, the FDA is still going over trials to decide whether additional action, such as a recall, is needed. There are many side effects connected with Actos. You should seek medical attention if you experience:

• shortness of breath or trouble breathing • chest pain • excessive fatigue • unusual heart beat • dilated neck veins • swelling of face, fingers, feet, or calves • decreased urine output • an increase in weight

Currently, the FDA is advising physicians not to use Actos on individuals that have bladder cancer. Patients should talk to their medical professional regarding all issues they might have.

The FDA says diabetics should also notify their doctor if they are having symptoms of bladder cancer including

• Blood in the Urine • Pain While Urinating • Frequent Urination • Feeling of Needing to Urinate With no Results
